Happy Thanksgiving, and don’t forget to Consider the Turkey!
Here is a round-up of media highlights about my latest book
As Thanksgiving approaches, I’m grateful for the many opportunities I’ve had to discuss my latest book, Consider the Turkey. This book invites readers to reflect on the ethics of our food choices and offers a fresh perspective on what is, for many Americans, the most significant meal of the year. Over the past month, I’ve shared the book’s message through interviews in leading publications. Here’s a look back at some of the highlights.
Print & Broadcast:
The New York Times: I was featured in their “The Interview” series, published on November 2. This conversation also aired as a podcast, allowing listeners to explore the ideas behind Consider the Turkey, and some of my other ideas as well.
The New York Times Opinion: On November 22, I contributed a guest essay about the absurdity of the annual turkey pardon tradition, and its ethical implications.
Wall Street Journal: Published an extract from the book, including philosopher Karen Bennett’s recipe for a seitan turkey. Read it here (published November 9).
TIME Magazine: I contributed an essay published on October 26, asking why the US lags so far behind other affluent countries on animal welfare.
Big Think: On November 5, Big Think featured an excerpt from Chapter 1 of Consider the Turkey. You can read it here.
The Guardian: Published an extract from the book. Read it here (published November 27).
NY1’s The Rush Hour: On November 19, I joined Annika Pergament to discuss the book and why now is the time to reconsider the Thanksgiving turkey.
The book has been reviewed in the Chicago Sun-Times (November 22) and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (November 24).
Podcasts:
Talking Animals: Syndicated on NPR, this episode explores the book’s relevance to Thanksgiving traditions. Listen here.
Philosophy Podcasts: A discussion on the ethical implications of our treatment of turkeys, featured on Philosophy Podcasts.
New Books Network: I joined Kyle Johannsen to discuss Consider the Turkey on the New Books Network.
3 Takeaways Podcast: I spoke about the key themes of Consider the Turkey and why they matter today on the 3 Takeaways Podcast.
The Simple Heart: I had the opportunity to discuss Consider the Turkey and its ethical themes with Wayne Hsiung in an interview available here.
Whatever your views on what we should or should not eat, I hope Consider the Turkey inspires meaningful conversations around your Thanksgiving table.
If you haven’t yet read Consider the Turkey, I hope you’ll add it to your reading list. You can purchase the book, here.
Happy Thanksgiving,

Thanks for focusing on birds. They are so neglected and increasingly abused.
Thank you for sharing. My current focus is driving improvement in North America, understanding that advances we make in animal welfare here are more readily adapted and adopted by other systems (feel free to check out our work at KinderGround.org).
Legislation rarely translates to meaningful improvement as enforcement is lackluster, if present at all. Supply chain efforts have halted as consumers response to undercover videos is practically a whimper, magnified by a lack of willingness to pay and supply chain attention focus being shifted to carbon and methane reduction.
I am curious about your thoughts on the unintended or unrecognized consequence of carbon/methane reduction tunnel vision, the supply chain driving further efficiency and intensification of our farming systems.
