Unnecessary cruelty in our species is an expression of profound weakness and poor judgment. Humans have evolved to develop compassion and empathy. Animals have co-evolved with us. Another organism that can experience suffering emotionally and physically deserves protection, consideration, recognition and obligations from a species that is not nearly as a vulnerable such as humans who have the capacity for extreme cruelty in the name of unbelievable narcissism. With industrial farmed animals all we do is take from them. The most forgiving take is that it is disgusting shameful behavior on our part as more intelligent and more aware creatures.
